CREATING THE ORIGINAL

Pelecypoda (Bivalves) means the shells consist of two halves, or valves. The valves are joined at the top. Species have highly developed gills that are used to filter particles of food suspended in the water as well as for respiration. Colors and patterns vary widely according to diet and habitat. There are about 11,000 kinds of bivalves, most of which live in shallow waters near land.
